Mfuwe Day Secondary School has struggled for the last 10 years with practically no infrastructure of its own. Classrooms have been borrowed from the Basic (Primary) school next door and now that pupil numbers have grown to over 600 the need has become urgent.
Some years ago the Government drew up plans to turn Mfuwe Day into for a good size Secondary Boarding School. With around 20,000 kids in the surrounding feeder schools it is certainly needed. Increasing the number of pupil places at Mfuwe Day Secondary School would be of huge benefit to the whole of South Luangwa and its many communities but this cannot be done without more infrastructure.
Project Luangwa's plans
Realising the importance of a good Secondary School to the area Project Luangwa has longterm plans to help the Mfuwe Day increase its infrastructure and improve standards of education.
The main school building
Project luangwa is proposing to join with other stakeholders to fund and build this large 1 x 4 classroom block. More news about this soon.
1x3 Classroom blocks
The school's first 1 x 3 classroom block was funded by Flatdogs' guest Fergus Lyons. This was completed and officially opened on 5th September 2011.
The 1 x 3 block funded by Mfuwe Lodge and the Bushcamp Company is due for completion in October 2011.
The community funded block progresses as the school's funds allow. Some help is given by Project Luangwa but we are mostly concentrating on other infrastructure at the school.
you can't have a school without toilets and three blocks are planned for the site.
Funds have been kindly donated for two basic dormitory buildings byguests of Mfuwe Lodge however further funds are needed to install some of the interior fixtures and fittings. We will also need funds to buy new bunk beds.
Where there are dormitories ablution blocks are needed too. Four are planned; two for boys and two for girls. the urgent need is for at least one for the boys. to provide water for this we will also need to install a borehole and pump.
